Forbes names Hoosier Hills Credit Union among Indiana’s tops

Briana Pace | Southern Indiana Business Report

For the fourth year in a row, Forbes has named Hoosier Hills Credit Union one of the top credit unions in Indiana.

“Our service is truly our differentiator,” Chief Marketing and Member Experience Officer, Christina Zazzetti, said. “We care about our team and we care about our members. When we invest in each other and in our communities, great things happen and recognitions like this are the result.”

As a credit union, Hoosier Hills is a non-profit financial cooperative, with no outside stockholders and the sole purpose of improving their member’s finances. Their mission is “to empower brighter financial futures and strengthen communities through extraordinary service and genuine connection, one Member at a time.”

“We stay focused on what matters most: listening to our members, meeting them where they are and delivering exceptional service every day,” Zazzetti said.

Anyone who is, or is an immediate family member of someone who, lives, works or worships in any of Hoosier Hill’s 40 qualifying counties is eligible to become a member. Only a $5 savings deposit is required to become an owner with a stake in and member at Hoosier Hills.

Due to the nature of the credit union, Hoosied Hills is able to charge fewer fees than a bank typically would.

Historically, credit unions have higher customer satisfaction than retail banks, according to the Forbes article accompanying the list of top credit unions in each state. Recently, credit unions’ satisfaction rates have been trending downward due to “a decrease in loyalty, communication alignment and understanding of fees.”

Forbes created “America’s Best-In-State Credit Unions 2026” list, released June 17, to aid customers in choosing the best credit union for themselves. Indiana’s other credit unions named on Forbes’ list include Industrial Federal Credit Union, Centra Credit Union, IU Credit Union, Indiana Members Credit Union and FORUM Credit Union.

The list was based on a survey by Statista where 26,000 U.S. residents were asked how satisfied and how likely they were to recommend the U.S. banks and credit unions where they have a checking or savings account, or had one within the last three years, plus ones they know of through friends and family.

Participants were then asked to rate them based on trust, customer service, digital tools, quality of financial advice and if fees are transparent and reasonable.

Also considered when creating the top credit union list were over 1.2 million reviews and ratings written between February 2023 and March 2026 about every bank and credit union. Online-only banks and credit unions, in addition to those with branches in 15 or more states, were excluded from the data gathered by Statista.

The reviews and ratings accounted for 20% of each credit union’s score. The remaining 80% came from the Statista survey. The credit unions with the highest scores made the list.

“Because this award is based on member feedback, it tells us we’re living our mission,” Zazzetti said.

To remain on Forbes’ list in the coming years, Hoosier Hills plans to continue listening to its members and team.

“Having an organization like Forbes recognize us as one of the best credit unions in the state certainly reinforces the trust people place in us,” Zazzetti said. “It’s a meaningful validation, even if it’s not the reason people choose Hoosier Hills Credit Union.”
