TrueScripts ranked No. 1 among Best Places to Work in Indiana

Carol Johnson, Southern Indiana Business Report

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Chamber of Commerce released the rankings of the 2023 Best Places to Work in Indiana Wednesday. Making the list were four companies located in the Radius Indiana region.

TrueScripts in Washington earned the No. 1 ranking in companies with 75-249 employees. True RX Health Strategists, also based in Daviess County, was ranked No. 12 in the medium category.

TrueScripts, a pharmacy benefit manager in Washington, was named the No. 1 Best Place to Work by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce May 10 at the Indiana Convention Center.

Founded in 2014, TrueScripts is a pharmacy benefit manager with 127 employees. TrueScripts first made the Best Places list two years ago in the small company category before moving to the medium division and also earned the top ranking in 2022.

“We feel blessed, we’re elated and couldn’t be happier,” said Hannah Wiscaver, TrueScripts human resources director, of the selection.

She said the company’s approach to cultivating a positive work environment starts with how the  company selects its employees and fostering connections among all employees.

“We do have an amazing culture and we try to hire core value sets over skill sets but the number one thing is our communication and connectedness,” Wiscaver said.

Once a month, TrueScripts has a company-wide meeting. Employees can make prayer requests and recognize other employees for their efforts with a “You rock!” shout-out.

The executive and ownership teams also put people first over profits, Wiscaver said.

“If you get COVID, we have a meal delivered. Instead of a set bereavement policy, you take off the time you need when a family member passes,” she said.

Personal milestones like new babies and marriages are also recognized.

TrueScripts has a wellness program and a dream manager who works with employees on achieving dreams in their personal lives.

While some companies conduct exit interviews when an employee leaves, TrueScripts conducts stay interviews to check in with employees on why they are happy in their jobs and stay with the company. Wiscaver said a recurring theme is employees feel that TrueScripts has trusted leadership.

TrueScripts has employees in 13 states working remotely or on a hybrid schedule. Employees are given flexibility, Wiscaver said, to attend to their responsibilities outside of work. The result, she said, are employees who want to be productive because they know they are valued.

More top companies

True Rx Management Services was founded in 2007 and recently built a new facility near Interstate 69, investing $2 million and adding more jobs. True Rx is a sister company of Williams Brothers Health Care Pharmacy.

In the small business category (15-74 employees), PIER Group in Jasper and JA Benefits, headquartered in Bedford, made the list. PIER Group was ranked No. 5 and JA Benefits was ranked No. 24. PIER Group provides technology solutions to the Research and Education industry.

JA Benefits, founded in 1988, is an employee benefit consulting firm, specializing in self-funding, as well as fully insured health plans for emerging, mid-market and large employers. JA Benefits had held the top spot in the Chamber rankings each of the past four years.

Edward Jones, a financial investment firm with statewide locations in the Radius region, was the top ranked firm in the major category (1,000 or more U.S. employees).

‘A Kind of Magic’

The list features 125 businesses representing more than 30 Hoosier cities and towns split among four categories based on employee count.

The rankings were unveiled during an awards dinner at the Indiana Convention Center. Both the list of companies and their rankings were determined through employer reports and an anonymous employee survey.

The businesses represented in the rankings have between 15 and 1,300 employees. Out-of-state companies were eligible as long as they had at least 15 full-time employees in Indiana.

“The theme of this year’s program was ‘A Kind of Magic,’ which captures the dynamic culture and experiences offered by all of these winning organizations,” Indiana Chamber President and CEO Kevin Brinegar said in written remarks. “Whether it’s workplace benefits, volunteerism, employee recognition programs or mental wellness initiatives, these employers consistently ‘wow’ their teams – and vice versa.”

2023 marked the 18th year for Best Places to Work in Indiana. Brinegar is pleased with the program’s staying power and the continued interest from participants.

“The impact on the state’s business community and workforce continues to expand as a multitude of Hoosier businesses and organizations have leveraged survey results from the program to improve their workplaces – and thus the lives of thousands of working Hoosiers,” said Brinegar.
