COMMENTARY: Shop local to support our economy, Hoosiers

By Rep. Steve Davisson

Indiana is home to nearly 200 farmers markets, with one in almost every county. Demand for locally made and grown products continues to increase, and whether buying fresh lettuce or honey, shopping at farmers markets is a great way to support our communities’ entrepreneurs, farmers and agriculture industry.

Several local farmers markets are in Southern Indiana, from French Lick to Georgetown and from Salem to Corydon. The Harrison County Farmers Market in Corydon is open Wednesdays from 4-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. The Washington County Farmers Market in Salem is open on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

These markets offer everything from vegetables and fruits to home-baked goods and handmade products. Shopping at these markets not only connects us to farm-fresh, healthy foods, but also supports our friends and neighbors. And, shopping local strengthens our economy, re-circulating money into our communities.

Hoosiers can also benefit from becoming an Indiana Grown member, where they are offered free marketing tools and resources to grow their customer base. Indiana Grown membership stands at more than 1,700, with over 50 partners, including farmers, distributors, wineries, grocers and restaurants. To learn more about becoming an Indiana Grown member, visit IndianaGrown.org. This site is also a great tool for consumers to find locally grown and sourced products, and it features a list of farmers markets throughout the state. Be sure to also check out Indiana Grown’s series of maps, trails and guides connecting consumers to members.

Now is a great time to get out and connect to locally sourced products, goods and services that our communities offer. Let’s work to support fellow Hoosiers and grow our local economy. Visit IndianaGrown.org to learn more about becoming a member and where to shop local.

State Rep. Steve Davisson, R-Salem, represents House District 73, which includes
Washington County and portions of Jackson, Lawrence, Orange, Clark and Harrison counties.
