BEDFORD – Construction of a new affordable housing project in Bedford that will serve adults 55 and older will begin this summer with completion expected in August 2026.
Hoosier Uplands will construct 32 units on Shawnee Drive, according to a press release from Hoosier Uplands. Limestone Edge will be made up of single story duplexes including 24 1-bedroom units and eight 2-bedroom units.
Eight units will be set aside for adults 55 and older who are experiencing homelessness.
“We are pleased to partner with Old National Bank, the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority, and the City of Bedford on this much needed housing,” said David Miller, Hoosier Uplands chief executive officer.
The project was awarded tax credits by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority; the Limestone Edge project team successfully completed the Indiana Supportive Housing Institute.
A development summary of the project notes the location of Limestone Edge offers convenient access to healthcare providers, restaurants, retailers and a movie theater. The location is served by the city’s public bus service, Transit Authority of Stone City.
Limestone Edge will include community space comprised of a meeting area, offices, arts and crafts room, laundry room, telehealth room / computer center, exercise room and an intergenerational playground.
The summary also noted Limestone Edge addresses a need for more affordable rental housing and supportive housing for older adults experiencing homelessness.
The summary cited an independent assessment of the rental market by Vogt Strategic Insights (VSI) that calculated a net demand for 276 affordable apartments for seniors with incomes from $12,510 to $40,140.
Income guidelines will apply for applicants. CPM Construction of Indianapolis will be the general contractor. Since 2000, Hoosier Uplands has constructed or rehabilitated and currently owns 436 units of affordable housing in Lawrence, Orange, Washington, Martin and Crawford counties. Over $75 million has been invested in those communities with these projects.
