Jasper Chamber partners with Indiana Chamber to offer affordable health plans to small businesses

Southern Indiana Business Report

The ever-increasing cost of healthcare poses a significant challenge for small businesses looking to grow their business and attract – as well as retain – valued employees.

For businesses that offer insurance, they face difficult decisions when faced with rising premiums. Some may switch plans with less coverage or opt for a higher deductible. And some may eliminate employee coverage.

The Indiana Chamber of Commerce understands the challenge and is working with local Chambers of Commerce across the state to provide an option to Chamber members.

The Jasper Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the Indiana Chamber to offer insurance through ChamberCare.

“We’re very grateful for the Indiana Chamber for passing this opportunity along to us,” said Nancy Eckerle, executive director of the Jasper Chamber of Commerce.

Eligible businesses must have between 2 and 50 employees and be members of the Jasper Chamber.

“In Jasper, that’s the majority of our businesses,” Eckerle said.

ChamberCare formed six years ago and is a multiple employer welfare arrangement. SIHO Insurance Services is providing health coverage; CVS CareMark and Delta Dental provide the pharmacy and dental/vision benefit, respectively.

When a business can’t offer employees health insurance, it limits the business’ growth. Eckerle said when needing to hire, those businesses typically lose out to other employers who offer benefits. Unless they are able to find employees who are covered by a spouse, they face challenges in employee retention.

Eckerle said she’s already fielded inquiries from Chamber members interested in learning more about ChamberCare.

“It may take a year to grow, but this time next year, I’m hoping to have 10 businesses enrolled,” she said.

Interested businesses will receive a list of local insurance agents in the Jasper area who can provide quotes and navigate the process.
