Ryan Craig was elected by a Republican Party caucus to serve as the next mayor of Jasper.
Craig will complete the term of Jasper Mayor Dean Vonderheide, who previously announced he was stepping down, effective March 31. The caucus was held Friday. Craig and Phil Mundy, a member of the Jasper Common Council, were the two candidates.
Craig is a member of the Dubois County Council and serves as president of the Southwest Indiana Association of Realtors. As reported by the DC Free Press, Craig said he would continue to build on the city’s momentum, which has included a downtown revitalization and infrastructure project along with plans for a Regional Wellness Center.
“My goal as mayor would be simple. Protect that progress and build on it,” he told the caucus.
The caucus was scheduled soon after Vonderheide announced his plans to leave office to give the mayor-elect ample time to shadow Vonderheide. Craig’s first day as mayor will be April 1.
