Southern Indiana Business Report
Indiana has more than 4,000 public water systems. These systems include schools and municipal utilities. Many of the state’s public water systems are faced with aging infrastructure, overflows and industrial contaminants.
Improving resiliency of water systems is the focus of a grant announced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
Competitive grant funding of $9 million is available for public water systems serving 10,000 or more people to improve resilience to natural disasters, extreme weather events, and cybersecurity threats.
Eligible projects for the Midsize and Large Drinking Water System Infrastructure Resilience and Sustainability Grant Program may include:
- Infrastructure upgrades to protect drinking water sources from floods, wildfires, and other natural hazards
- Cybersecurity enhancements to safeguard operational systems
- Sustainability improvements that increase long-term system resilience
