Celebrating freedom a feast for the economy; consumer spending on food tops $8.9B

Carol Johnson, Southern Indiana Business Report

The Fourth of July is not only a celebration of freedom but also a major driver of economic activity. All those cookouts, pool parties, patriotic T-shirts and fireworks trigger a significant surge in consumer spending.

In 2024, $2.8 billion was spent on fireworks and spending on food last year for the Fourth of July topped $8.9 billion, according to WalletHub.

Beyond the hot dogs, burgers and potato salad, Americans also spend on apparel, decorations and flags. In 2023, spending on patriotic items such as flags, decorations, and clothing was estimated at $6.7 billion. Sales of outdoor furniture, grills, and similar  items also increase as families prepare for backyard celebrations.

Community celebrations also drive participation in the holiday as cities and towns hold parades, festivals and fireworks displays.

The Radius Indiana region is home to several festivals that will celebrate America’s independence. From Linton to Pekin, you can find a parade and fireworks.

You’ll find the largest Fourth of July parade in the state at the Linton Freedom Festival. The parade draws nearly 40,000 people each year to the Greene County city.

“Our crowds are so large,  people will be six deep along the parade route on a pretty day,” said Cheryl Hamilton, executive director of the Linton-Stockton Chamber of Commerce.

This year’s parade will have around 170 units, she said.

The parade is a point of community pride, Hamilton said, and it also boosts local businesses.

“We don’t have a lot of hotels but two are sold out,” she said.

The Fourth falling on a Friday, means a three-day weekend and Hamilton said that extends the holiday and consumer spending. She recalled a local grocer once told her food shopping in Linton for the Fourth can meet or even exceed Thanksgiving.

“Main Street is decorated, the highway is decorated, there is a great sense of community pride for the parade,” she said.
