Loogootee engineering firm receives ACEC Merit Award for groundbreaking water treatment project in Poseyville

Southern Indiana Business Report

LOOGOOTEE – Midwestern Engineers Inc., has been awarded a 2025 Engineering Excellence Merit Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) for its innovative work on a transformative water infrastructure project in Poseyville.

Central to the project was the implementation of Indiana’s first municipal low-waste ion exchange nitrate treatment system, a groundbreaking solution to combat high nitrate levels in groundwater, which can be harmful to infants and pregnant mothers. According to a press release, this is a significant concern in agricultural communities that have a higher risk of contamination. Midwestern worked closely with town officials to tailor the solution to Poseyville’s specific needs, ensuring long-term sustainability and efficient operations for local staff.

The new treatment system became fully operational in July 2024 and has since maintained consistent compliance with nitrate levels well within safe limits. The success of the project underscores Midwestern’s commitment to public health, innovation and community-focused engineering. The 2025 ACEC award recognizes Midwestern Engineers’ excellence in engineering design, project execution, and environmental stewardship reinforcing the firm’s reputation as a leader in water resources infrastructure and as a trusted partner for communities across Indiana.

Established in 1959, Midwestern Engineers is a recognized industry leader in water, sewer and stormwater infrastructure. As a full-service firm, Midwestern Engineers provides in-house civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering expertise to municipalities and utility districts across Indiana, consistently delivering solutions tailored to local needs.
