LINTON – The Linton-Stockton School Corporation will begin a school recycling program after receiving a $1,000 grant.
The National Lieutenant Governors Association awarded the money to the Greene County school district as a part of its STEM Scholarship Program.
The program seeks to fund programming, curriculum, equipment and other expenses related to the teaching of science, technology, engineering and math subjects.
The Linton-Stockton School Corp. will use its funding to provide plastic and paper recycling bins in classrooms with a long-term goal of making a school in the district a new recycling center for the broader community.
“We are very excited to get started with our Changemakers for Greene Recycling Program as it is our hope to inspire our students to take action to make real change in our school, in our community, and ultimately in our world,” Linton-Stockton Academic Programs Coordinator Susan Anderson said in a news release.
Linton used to have a drop-off location for recyclables, but it is no longer in operation. The Greene County Recycling Center is about a 15-minute drive from Linton.
“Time is a valuable commodity and many families simply don’t recycle now due to having to drive 15 minutes there and back to deliver their items,” Anderson said. “This is why we have a BIG dream of someday having a student-run recycling center right here at our school. We certainly know that the dream will not happen overnight. The BIG dream will take years to make happen. It is our hope that we can inspire our students, staff, and community to care about the difference we CAN make!”
More than 150 applications were submitted to the program and a dozen schools from 12 states were selected as winners of the award ranging from $500 to $1,000.
