Ivy Tech names new provost

Southern Indiana Business Report

INDIANAPOLIS — Ivy Tech Community College has selected Dr. Dean McCurdy as its next provost.

McCurdy, who has been serving as interim provost since January and as chancellor for Ivy Tech Kokomo since 2017, was unanimously chosen by a 12-member search committee made up of Ivy Tech’s president’s cabinet, chancellors, faculty, trustees and higher education partners after a national search conducted by Greenwood Asher & Associates.

“I am elated to serve as the college’s next provost and look forward to collaborating with President Ellspermann and other leaders across the state to continue providing more Hoosiers with access to a quality education and high-wage, high-demand jobs,” said McCurdy.

McCurdy joined Ivy Tech after serving as the associate vice president for instruction at Kalamazoo Valley Community College (KVCC). He also served as founding chief academic and administrative officer for KVCC’s Bronson Healthy Living Campus – a campus built in partnership with regional health care systems and focused on nursing, health sciences, and sustainable food systems. Dean also served as dean of instruction for math and sciences for KVCC and has decades of additional experience from roles of increasing responsibility at four-year liberal arts colleges and universities, including Carleton University in Ontario, Bates College and Bowdoin College in Maine, and Albion College in Albion, Michigan, where he served as director of the honors program, department chair, and as a faculty member.

“Dean’s knowledge of Ivy Tech, higher education and Indiana’s workforce needs are complemented by his collaborative approach,” said Sue Ellspermann, president of Ivy Tech. “As former chancellor of the Kokomo campus and now our provost, I am confident he will continue bringing new ideas, approaches and partnerships to the College that strengthen student success and outcomes.”

McCurdy holds a bachelor’s degree with honors in biology from Acadia University in Nova Scotia and a doctoral degree in biology from Carleton University in Ontario. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
