Casino still struggling to reach pre-COVID numbers

By Miles Flynn | Southern Indiana Business Report

FRENCH LICK — French Lick Casino saw a taxable adjusted gross revenue (AGR) of $6,850,472 for March, according to the Indiana Gaming Commission’s tax summary for that month. While the figure is up from February by $1,364,367, or 25%, it’s down from March 2021 by $300,193, or 4%. It’s down even more from the casino’s last pre-COVID March, March 2019, missing the mark set then by $1,845,475, or 21%.

With three quarters of the current fiscal year now in the books, the casino’s AGR running total now stands at $55,283,542. The figure is up from one year ago by $10,853,591, or 24%. However, it’s down from where it was in pre-COVID March 2019 by $10,674,034, or 16%.

Taking a step back to the statewide level, the combined AGR totals of the 13 properties around Indiana came in at $219,182,765 for March. That number is up from February by $31,952,681, or — not unlike French Lick’s performance — 17%. The similarities end there, though. The latest statewide AGR total is up from March 2021 by $20,352,394, or 10%. It is also up from pre-COVID March 2019 by $11,575,770, or 6%.

The statewide running AGR total for the current fiscal year is now at $1,745,329,779. The figure is up from one year ago by $371,741,245, or 27%, and up from pre-COVID March 2019 by $214,125,195, or 14%.

Turning now to taxes, French Lick paid $728,073 in wagering tax and $74,720 in sports wagering tax for March, bringing its total gaming tax burden for the month to $802,293 and its total thus far for the fiscal year to $3,188,884. Meanwhile, the combined totals for the 13 Hoosier casinos came to $67,820,950 in wagering tax, $3,066,157 in sports wagering tax, and $4,791,552 in the supplemental wagering tax paid by the 10 properties that had paid the old admission tax prior to abolition by the legislature, bringing gaming tax totals to $75,678,659 for the month and $478,655,611 for the fiscal year.
