Colleagues, communities mourn passing of Rep. Steve Davisson

Southern Indiana Business Report

SALEM — Southern Indiana has lost a veteran legislator, local business owner and friend. Steve Davisson passed away Sept. 19 at his residence in Salem. He was 63.

Davisson, a native of Scott County, graduated pharmacy school in 1981. He had worked at Salem pharmacies since 1983 and opened his own business, Good Living Pharmacy, in Salem in 2016.

He’d served as District 73 State Representative since 2011. Davisson had been the vice chair of the House Committee on Public Health, and he was a member of both the House Commerce, Small Business and Economic Development Committee, and the House Agriculture and Rural Development Committee.

In August, Gov. Eric Holcomb awarded Davisson the Sagamore of the Wabash Award, one of the state’s highest honors, for his outstanding service to the state of Indiana.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Rep. Steve Davisson,” Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch said in a statement. “He was such an admirable public figure who always looked out for Hoosiers and the state’s best interest.”

Crouch said they shared a connection to Salem before their time together as colleagues in the Indiana House of Representatives. “My uncle, Donald Crouch, was a family dentist in Salem, and his patients would go to Rep. Davisson to fill their prescriptions. I always enjoyed catching up with Steve and talking about our families.”

She said she’ll always remember him for his positive attitude. “No one would have ever known he was sick because of his upbeat spirit, which was his outlook throughout his life,” Crouch shared. “I hope Hoosiers will keep his family, friends and constituents in their prayers during this challenging time.”

House Speaker Todd Huston wrote, “Steve Davisson lived an extraordinary life of love, courage and service. While short in stature, Steve was a giant of a man in service to his family, community and state. He lived his life full of love and optimism, which made him such a blessing to know. Steve will be greatly missed by me and everyone who had the privilege to know him.”

Sen. Erin Houchin said in a statement she is “heartbroken” over the loss of her dear friend, colleague and fellow Salem resident. “An ever-dedicated public servant and leader in our community, his loss will leave a lasting void,” she wrote. “He recently sent me a message concerned that he wouldn’t be a good partner next session. I told him he always was and always will be a great partner. I pray we will all carry forth his legacy of kindness and dedication to others. I loved him as my friend and respected him as my colleague. It was my pleasure and honor to serve alongside him. My prayers are with his family, including his wife Michelle and their children and grandchildren. Rest in peace, my friend. I’ll miss you.”

Funeral service will be held Friday, Sept. 24, at 11 a.m. at Salem Church of the Nazarene. Visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 23, from 1-9 p.m. at Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home in Salem and on Friday, Sept. 24, from 9-11 a.m. at the church.
