Workshop focusing on estate, succession planning for family farms

By Colleen Baker | Indiana Farm Bureau

INDIANAPOLIS — For the second year in a row, the Indiana Agricultural Law Foundation’s (INAgLaw) Estate & Succession Planning for the Family Farm event will be held virtually. The event will be held via Zoom and will be free of charge for all attendees. Family farmers and attorneys are encouraged to join on Thursday, July 22, from 9 a.m.-noon.

“Due to the successful turnout and engagement of last year’s virtual workshop, INAgLaw decided to move forward with a virtual event for the second year in a row,” said John Shoup, director of INAgLaw, a charitable organization established in 2005 by Indiana Farm Bureau. “The three-hour discussion will cover topics such as tax law changes, farm succession planning and how to protect your inheritance. More important, the event is designed to encourage family members to begin to communicate about the future of their farm operation.”

The 2021 session topics and speakers are as follows:

  • Preview of coming estate tax law changes – How might changes impact your farm family? Presented by Gary Chapman, partner, Bose McKinney & Evans LLP.
  • Protecting your family’s inheritance from the nursing home. Presented by Dan Gordon, Gordon and Associates.
  • Farmers live in glass houses – Tales of what not to do in estate and transition planning. Presented by Jeanne Bernick, partner, K•COE ISOM.

The virtual workshop is open to anyone interested in understanding the importance of estate and succession planning to their business. Participants will walk away with valuable tips for getting started. Attendees also will have time to ask questions after each presentation.

Registration for the event is required. Attendees may register at www.infb.org/events or www.INAgLaw.org through Monday, July 19. The session has been approved for three CLE credits; attorneys will receive one credit for each presentation.
